Our thoughts The Beluga is a lovely traditional motor yacht with a really superb crew - we have never heard anything but high praise for their service and superb attitude. There are lots of thoughtful touches about Beluga, including a reusable water bottle in your welcome pack, free snorkel gear, and even some walking poles for guests to use over the lava fields. Fine dining in fine surroundings Aboard the Santa Cruz II food is an experience, not just a fuel. Her dedicated Director of Gastronomy Byron Rivera (a graduate of the Cordon-Bleu school) guides the preparation of delicious and elegant Ecuadorian and international cuisine. The menus always feature fresh local fish and locally grown fruit and vegetables. As much of the food as possible is sourced locally, and where possible it’s organic. The chefs are all passionate about what they do, and that’s reflected in the beautiful presentation. You have the option of enjoying your meals indoors in the tasteful Beagle Dining Room or outside in the ocean air on the Panorama Deck. Activities and excursions for a lifetime of memories Santa Cruz II’s team of experienced Guides build fantastic itineraries to make sure that you always see the very best of the wildlife and local habitats. Snorkeling and sea kayaking are available, as are trips on the ship’s own glass-bottomed boat. Our comment The experienced crew is led by Captain Christian, who we discovered worked for many years in Germany previously. Looking after your every need will be hotel manager Macario, one of the most experienced in the Galápagos with over 10 years operating on cruises. Heading up the kitchen is chef Marco, from Austria, we leads a brigade of 7, including a dedicated pastry chef! Marco's team serve up delicious breakfast and lunch buffets, and for dinner you will have a choice of up to 4 options per course from the menu. You get lots of extra facilities on this vessel including two clothes dryers for guests to use and, unusually, internet connection is available for $46 per device - although worth noting that premium cabins include this service in their pricing. When we were there, they had just finished converting the sun deck into a beautiful and bright lounge area. One thing we did like is the fact that guide briefings are held in different languages, each with its own room. You can choose one in your language and not have to wait for everything to be translated 2 or 3 times as happens on other boats. A nice touch. For family adventuring, this is the ship to choose. Younger members of your party will be treated like princes and princesses and they will have plenty of space and activities to keep them happy all day. All cabins have private en suite bathrooms with full size showers, hair dryers and full-height mirrors. Outside spaces are beautifully laid to teak or ocean-blue finishes with stylish and comfortable seating and loungers. There’s a wonderful wood-clad jacuzzi tub in the centre of the sun deck - a perfect place to unwind after your amazing wildlife excursions. An expert team Isabella II’s captain and senior crew are all top-ranking naval officers who know the waters of the archipelago intimately, with over 60 years experience between them. Isabella carries a fully qualified medical officer on board for complimentary guest consultations, available 24/7. Your fully bilingual naturalist guides give you fascinating presentations about the land and marine wildlife you will see, ask any of your questions, and lead you on some amazing excursions to land and sea. The yacht carries her own snorkeling equipment for guests to enjoy (with wetsuits for hire if required) as well as a fleet of ocean-going kayaks. For those who don’t swim (or don’t wish to) there’s no need to miss out - Isabela II has her very own glass-bottomed boat. There are few better vessels to choose as your base for your Galápagos adventures. Our comments Isabela II has all the benefits that a larger boat bring, but with only 20 cabins and 26 crew none of the impersonality. We love the al fresco dining room and we think she has one of the best bars in the islands. The fact that so many of her crew have been with her so long is proof she’s a well-run and happy ship, and we always find her guides can really get across the magic of the Galápagos. This is a very experienced crew. Captain Richard tells us he's been skipper for over 10 years, and hotel manager Gerd has extensive hotel industry experience and speaks English, German, Spanish and French. Your chef is Alsibar, he beats both of them with over 20 years experience on board! Speaking of food, his kitchen serves wonderful Ecuadorian specialities, including suckling pig and ceviche. Very traditional and very delicious. In terms of excursions and naturalist experience, this ship is very well-equipped. She has her own infrared camera which they use to show the temperature of cold-blooded animals, microscope and other scientific equipment used on excursions to let you really understand the nature of the islands.
