HanseMerkur: FAQ
When do I need to purchase my travel insurance?
In general, we encourage travelers to select our insurance packages when they are booking their trip.
If you did not book insurance with your trip and now would like to do so, please contact your Travel Specialist. Generally speaking, keep the following deadlines in mind:
Cancelation and Full Protection can be booked up to 30 days before the start of your reservation. Travel Companion can be booked at any time before the start of your reservation.
What if I want to add additional services (such as an optional day trip) after booking a trip?
Of course, you can also add optional services to your trip after booking. If necessary, the insurance premium will be adjusted to the new travel price and you will be billed for the difference.
I am traveling with friends and/or family. If they get sick and cancel the trip, can I also cancel free of charge?
Yes, because your fellow passengers are among the "risk persons." You can cancel the trip free of charge if one of your fellow passengers falls ill. Separate bookings with individual booking numbers are also possible as long as the travel period is identical. NOTE: This rule is limited to a maximum of 6 people from 2 households!
Are travel cancelations possible in the event of force majeure (e.g., in case of political unrest) covered?
Cancelations due to force majeure (e.g., war) or travel warnings are an insured event. However, this is not a problem for you. We will cancel the trip if we cannot guarantee that we can carry out all services, or if we believe that your safety is at risk.
In the event of a trip cancelation, are my other travel costs (e.g., separately booked flights) also covered?
Only the services booked through us are insured. If you book your flights separately, it is best to take out insurance with the airline at the time of your booking.
If I get sick during the trip and need treatment, do I have to pay for the treatment in advance?
If something happens during the trip, you generally don't have to pay in advance. Hospitals and doctors can issue a declaration of cost coverage. In some cases and destinations, however, you may have to pay out of pocket for certain procedures and medications.
If you paid anything in advance, you can always submit the bill to HanseMerkur after the trip to receive a refund. This applies to all packages containing health insurance (e.g., Full Protection and Travel Companion).
What happens if I cancel my trip - do I get a refund of the insurance price?
If you cancel your trip for an uninsured reason, HanseMerkur will reimburse part of the insurance price depending on how close we are to the departure date.
Does my travel health insurance also cover countries for which a travel warning (due to a pandemic) has been issued?
Yes, our travel health insurance (part of Cancelation and Travel Companion) also covers these countries. Our insurance conditions do not provide for any pandemic-related benefit exclusions.
Is a Covid infection covered?
HanseMerkur recognizes a Covid-19 infection as an unexpected serious illness with proof of a positive test result (PCR test).
Here is how our packages provide coverage in Covid cases:
- Cancelation and Full Protection: Coverage of entire travel price due to unexpectedly serious illness (e.g., Covid-19), vaccination intolerance, and full travel price reimbursement if canceled within the first half of the trip (max. up to 8th day).
- Full Protection and Travel Companion: comprehensive travel health insurance protection abroad at private patient level.
Will the additional costs be covered if I am not ill myself but cannot travel or return due to a quarantine situation?
Costs from personal quarantines are not insured by Cancelation, Travel Protection, or Travel Companion.
Please note: Our Corona Travel Protection (exclusively part of our Flexi Fare) offers you insurance coverage if a doctor or health authority orders a personal quarantine due to a Coronavirus infection.
Will HanseMerkur cover the costs if I am not allowed to fly at the departure airport (or enter a country) because I have an elevated temperature?
HanseMerkur requires a medical certificate to evaluate whether this is an insured event. In such cases, you need to visit a medical professional immediately.
Please note: Our Corona Travel Protection (exclusively part of our Flexi Fare) offers you insurance coverage if you are refused carriage by authorized third parties (e.g., airport staff) because you are suspected of being infected with the Coronavirus.
I had contact with people who tested positive shortly before the trip; my own results are not clear, but I am still encouraged to stay home. Does HanseMerkur pay the cancelation costs?
Suspected infections are not covered events. You will always need a positive PCR test for insurance protection.
I am on vacation, but would like to travel back due to a serious Covid illness of a relative.
A relative counts as a "person at risk". In the event of an unexpected serious illness of a person at risk, the trip may be interrupted. The costs of the lost travel service as well as the additional return travel costs incurred will be covered.
I fall ill with Covid-19 while on vacation and therefore cannot fly back as planned. Will HanseMerkur cover the further costs for overnight stays on site as well as the additional costs for the return journey?
Full Protection and Cancelation: If you cannot fly back for an insured reason, HanseMerkur will cover the additional accommodation costs and the additional costs for the return journey.
Please note: Our Corona Travel Protection (exclusively part of our Flexi Fare) offers insurance coverage for the additional accommodation and/or return travel costs if you have to go into quarantine (even without being ill).
I already have travel insurance through my credit card. Do I still need to purchase travel insurance?
We recommend customers to carefully study the terms and conditions of their credit card insurance before their trip. This insurance coverage is often insufficient. For example:
- Typically, only cardholders themselves are insured.
- In many cases, this insurance is only active if the responsible insurer is informed of the travel destination and duration before the trip.
- In addition, the insurance included in credit cards frequently includes basic services only.
- Travel is often insured up to a certain travel price (e.g., €2,500); this means that clients have no insurance for more expensive trips.
- Many credit card insurance companies tend to have high deductibles (i.e., your out-of-pocket expenses are higher).
