Garrapatero Beach is a quiet stretch of pale sand on the eastern side of Santa Cruz, about 19 kilometres from Puerto Ayora. A short trail from the parking area leads through the dry zone to the coast, where mangroves frame the beach and the bay opens onto calm-looking turquoise water.
Just behind the sand lies a brackish lagoon. Flamingos and white-cheeked pintails may appear here, while shorebirds and species of the surrounding arid zone add interest along the approach. Wildlife sightings naturally vary, so the pleasure of the visit is as much the peaceful setting as any particular encounter.
With roughly 1.5 kilometres of beach and fewer built-up surroundings than the town beaches, Garrapatero offers a relaxed contrast to Santa Cruz's busier visitor sites. It is a place for an unhurried coastal walk, time by the water and a closer look at the transition between dry forest, mangroves, lagoon and sea.
Garrapatero lies about 19 kilometres northeast of Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz.
The walk from the parking area to the beach is approximately one kilometre.
A brackish lagoon behind the beach can attract flamingos and white-cheeked pintails, but sightings are not guaranteed.
