Juan War Ein Unglaublicher Guide Und Die Samba Ist Ein Großartiges Schiff

Cannot Say Enough Good Things
My husband, teenage daughter and I travelled on the Samba North West trip in August. I cannot say enough good things. Our guide, Jan Post, was not only extremely knowledgeable, but able to keep everyone happy. His talks on physics of flight, ocean currents, geology and volcanic activity, Darwin were fascinating and kept everyone interested. Accounts of historical scandals were entertaining as well. The crew is so friendly and caring. It is impossible to see how the chef can prepare the variety of delicious dishes in the kitchen. Meals are terrific. All your equipment needs are met: snorkels, fins, masks, wetsuits, towels to dry your feet. They think of everything.
Of course, the reason you go is the wildlife, and the opportunity to see wildlife on land and in the water is incredible. You are swimming with sea lions and turtles, lots of turtles. You are standing in arms reach of nesting frigates and watching blue footed boobies court and mate 7 feet away. You walk across a lava flow and there are 3 spectacular flamingos in a small pond. You can watch flightless cormorants dive and hunt for fish a few feet from your snorkel, and see eagle rays, parrot fish, etc. Watching a flock of boobies herd small fish, and then plunge dive to catch them.

Privileged To Have Participated In This Experience.
I want to add my voice to the glowing reviews of the Samba, after doing the northwest itinerary in Aug 2011, with Juan Salceda as our guide. Obviously the choice of boat size and class is a personal one; some people like the big cruise ships; this is not the boat for them. We had 15 passengers and 7 crew; the boat held us (or at least the passengers) quite comfortably, and provided a surprising number of intimate corners (bow, stern, 2nd floor, dining/common room) where people could retreat or crash in as needed. As a converted fishing boat it is not the prettiest sailing vessel, but it offers good value without compromising on comfort. Typical day had 2 hikes and one snorkel, as well as a "navigation"; these often occurred at night, and the Samba can roll or pitch (depending on direction) a fair bit, so if you have a sensitive stomach be prepared. Juan Salcena is an amazingly knowledgable guide, with deep roots in the islands, completely fluent in English and Spanish, with degrees in biology, geology, and environmental education. Outings were choreographed with a detailed understanding of the time of day of different animal behaviors -- they know what the turtles/boobies/etc. will be doing at what hour of the day. The crew were very diligent, capable and courteous; Spanish-only or smattering-of-English speakers except for Juan. Food was excellent and abundant. The passengers were an international group, including Aussies, Kiwis, Europeans, and North Americans; some Spanish speakers and some English, so all tour info was repeated in both languages. (Useful if you are trying to learn Spanish). Passenger ages ranged from 10 through 50's; I didn't hear a single complaint from anyone during the tour; we unanimously felt extremely privileged to have participated in this experience.
